During advanced training in regional anaesthesia the trainee should:
· Possess the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to undertake safe clinical practice at a level of confidence commensurate with stated objectives and level of training
· Develop a commitment to standards and life-long learning to maintain those standards
· Develop confidence, knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for independent professional practice.
Experience should be gained in:
· Preoperative assessment and appropriate selection of regional anaesthesia
· Use of regional anaesthesia for elective patients in a tertiary hospital setting
· Effective management of regional anesthesia in critically ill patients.
· Regional block techniques
· Intraoperative management
· Treating the complications of regional anaesthesia .
· Assessment of postoperative, in-patient and domiciliary outcomes.
Knowledge and understanding
Knowledge should be gained of:
· The anatomy of the peripheral nervous system
· The pharmacology of local anaesthetic drugs
· Equipment used in regional anaesthesia
· The influence of regional anaesthesia on perioperative outcomes
The trainee should have an understanding of:
· Local and national guidelines pertaining to acute pain relief
· Research methods in regional anaesthesia
Professional Qualities
The Fellow is expected to:

Specific Skills
The trainee should show:
· Competence in a wide range of regional anaesthetic techniques.
· Familiarity with a variety of technical approaches
· Competence in the recognition and treatment of complications of regional
anaesthesia.
· Familiarity with equipment used for regional anaesthetic techniques, which include ultrasound machine,nerve stimulators,various needle,catheter and infusion systems.
Supervision and Teaching
Trainees should:
· Develop the ability to teach and supervise trainee anaesthetists of all grades
· Have a clear understanding of the concept and requirements for continuing professional development and the role of appraisal and assessment.
· Teach in the biannual Dundee Cadaver/Ultrasound course within the Cuschieri Surgical Skills Centre .
Research and Audit
The trainee is expected to:
· Participate in audit and research projects in clinical regional anaesthesia
· Develop expertise in the design of clinical research projects
· Gain experience in applications to the Ethics Committee, MHRA, R&D
· Apply for small scale hospital grants, under supervision
· Write abstracts and scientific papers
· Present abstracts at local and national scientific meetings
· Cooperate closely with other students involved in regional anaesthesia research
Assessment/Examination
The trainee should:
· Develop a learning agreement with a supervisor trained in regional anaesthesia
· Identify their own learning needs using SMART -Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-defined
· Set targets for training
· Identify learning resources & strategies in order to achieve objectives
· Evaluate their own learning and training programme at least every 3 months
· Arrange times for assessment
· Develop a portfolio of experience/progress/achievement for inspection during the appraisal
· Offer documentation necessary to complete the Educational Supervisors Structured Report (ESSR) and Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP)
· Be assessed by Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS)
· Be assessed by Anaesthetic-Clinical Evaluation Exercises (anaes-CEX)
· Be assessed using Case-based Discussion (CbD)
· Have assessment of Anaesthetic non-Technical Skills (ANTS)
· Develop sufficient knowledge and skills and experience to sit the ESRA Diploma examination
